iona saw her first real snow this week (no this is not a picture of her in the snow..but look how happy she is that we are talking about it)....we got 7 or 8 inches on thursday....as we took her out for her inaugural romp (for which ernie was so much more excited) it reminded me of when i was a kid and my mom would send us out for fresh snow to make slushes with....on one occasion we proudly returned with a tray of pretty yellow snow that we assumed had been magically flavored by the winter fairies (thus saving my mom the effort)...i couldn't have been more then 3-4 and i still remember my mom emphatically telling us 'don't eat yellow snow!' which i feel is really good advice for a kid....so this got me thinking about other good advice we receive when we are young...'never trust a fart' seems smart (thanks bud!) and the 30 second rule is good to learn young (although it takes experience to understand the subtle yet important variations of this rule e.g. 30 seconds in your kitchen different then 30 seconds on the street)..in an effort to balance iona's education i am sending out a request for other useful advice...it may be a while before it sinks in for her but it is never too early to start....

i always regret saying mean things about people behind their back in middle school! be kind its so easy to do!
1. "You'll never learn any younger" - Mr. Heller of Heller's Seafood. This was his response when I told him that I didn't know how to attach a new plug onto a chord to an electric scale. He gave me some quick verbal instructions and told me to get it done. On my first attempt, an electric orb blasted out of the socket and and blew the fuse. While the advice didn't work out well there, it's helped since.

Lots of my memorable quotes revolve around me being an insane kid. There wasn't any "reach for the stars" type quotes that really motivated me, it was more like, "If you keep pulling the dogs ears like that he'll bite your face again."
1.) When you ash out the window, make sure the rear windows are all the way up.
2.) If anyone's clothes catch fire in the car, pull over before trying to help them.
3.) If you have a choice, douse someone with water, not apple cider, even if the cider is closer.

wise advice given to a group of us at a dingy bar in college station, texas....i have actually quoted it many times over the last ten years...
so i guess another piece of advice is - you just never know where wisdom will come from....
i just noticed iona's blog!! i am so psyched to read it and to see how big and how happy she is!
i have one piece of advice: "the face of a child can say so much. especially the mouth part of the face." that's actually jack handey's advice. i miss you all and hope i see you soon!
